
In 2007, the Scottish Government identified a number of key sectors which offer high-growth potential and the capacity to create economic impact for Scotland. The Creative Industries is one of these sectors, with an emphasis on digital content and technologies. The definition of the Creative Industries is those which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent. In the UK, the Creative Industries sector generally comprise 13 distinct areas of expertise - advertising, architecture, art and antiques, crafts, design, designer fashion, film, interactive leisure software, music, performing arts, publishing, software and computer services and TV and radio.

The supporting infrastructure for digital media in Scotland is generally strong. Broadband provision is widespread, and new investment in the physical infrastructure at Pacific Quay in Glasgow and Seabraes Yard in Dundee will help to build high profile concentrations of digital media activity in key locations, whilst recognising another key dynamic of this industry. Most start-ups gravitate to areas of cities or communities where cheap-rent, DIY facilities and existing creative communities are available. This is an ‘organic’ process which cannot and should not be macro-managed by either strategy or public agencies.
Business to Business OpportunitiesWhilst Digital Media is a market in its own right, Scotland has core strengths in leading edge research that makes use of digital media technologies and applications in novel industry settings....The business applications of digital media are many and diverse, opening up substantial global market opportunities. However, not enough is known about Scotland’s strengths in these areas, and further work will be required to provide an audit of those areas where digital media and interactivity are transforming other sectors.
